Food for Thought
As for the search for truth,
I know from my own painfull searching,
with its many blind alleys,
how hard it is to take a reliable step, be it ever so small,
towards the understanding of that which is truly significant.
In one of his classes the famous Cambridge philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein asked:
"Why did people used to think that the Sun went around the Earth?"
One of his students replied:
"Because it looks as if the Sun goes around the Earth."
"And how would it look if the Earth went around the Sun?"
The obvious answer is: exactly the same.
Consider this the next time you think you are right because it looks that way to you.
who have never swum except in a swimming pool,
never slept except in a building,
never climbed a mountain except in a computer game.
What planet are you on?
Too much of a good thing ...
As a species we survive and thrive through collaboration.
do we teach our children in schools that that is cheating?
'Everything you can eat comes from here!'
In what do you believe?
Do you believe in Cunningness or in Honesty?
Have you put your faith in Guile or in Openness?
Who do you worship and serve;
the Lie or the Truth?
do you think,
do you have two hands?
Are you cherishing the things that make you happy?
Are you cherishing the things that make you unhappy?
Some people believe it is right and their holy duty to kill people
who are enemies of their faith.
Other people believe it is wrong to kill an animal for their dinner
and will rather eat plants.
How do we know we are right about what is right?
Did you have time to think today?
The unexamined life is not worth living.
Second Congo War:
World War II:
20,000 casualties and counting
51,000 casualties and counting
Is there any other species on this earth that kills so many of its own
as humans do?
Looking back over the course of human history
countless crimes have been committed in
the name of a God or Goddess.
We know where and when they happened.
We know dates and names
still we don't know better.
Why is that?
Using a small scale, local farming to feed a world
of nine billion people
would consume every hectare
of the earth's surface.
Is this maybe an indication that there are simply
to many of us?
It is a well-established fact that wealthy societies have fewer childeren.
We, humans, breed less in booms.
Our urge to procreate seems to increase in times of hunger. The more children we have the greater the opportunity for finding and generating resources for the family.
But what will happen when we, as a species, reach the limits of the total resources available?
A lot of people will go hungry and live in poverty.
And you know what that means!
We'll have more children!
Without your senses a hammer could hit your senseless thumb without you ever noticing.
The hammer would not even catch your slightest attention. It would simply not exist for you at all.
What doesn't catch your attention? What doesn't exist for you at all?
Inspired by Bishop George Berkeley (1684-1753)
How did right now actually happen?
We visit other cities to get a taste of its local culture,
see its old buildings and walk in a different world.
Why is it then that we continue
to build universal, glass and steel constructions
once we are back home?
If Adam and Eve ate from the Tree
whose fruit will open your eyes and
make you like a god knowing good and bad,
how is it then possible that today
we do so many things that are not good?
